Animal Husbandry and Handicraft Production
Over 200 people have benefitted from our workshops in handicraft production and animal husbandry. These workshops are conducted in UXO impacted communities, where children and their families can work together and learn how to improve their skills and make them marketable. Although the focus is to teach trades, the activities help UXO survivors develop better self-esteem and confidence through being able to contribute to family income. The trainings encourage people to be more active through small group discussions, and by becoming a focal point for animal raising or handicraft information, other villagers see them in a better light.
While other programs require travel to a teaching center, our strategy for village based activities favors female involvement and over 80% of our participants are women.
Handicraft producer groups of silk weavers, sewers and women trained in the traditional art of Pandau embroidery, collaborate to create a supply chain for our Village Shop at the Xieng Khouang Visitor Center. Proceeds from these sales go directly to the villages.
